Staff Development on Internet Safety |

Time Frame: Typically a 3 hour workshop
RATIONALE: With the world wide growth of problems related to Internet Safety; teachers will be on the forefront in providing the education and guidance needed by students to be safe while on-line.
GOALS:
To give staff first hand experience with the tools and resources needed to incorporate this topic into the curriculum. To gain knowledge for developing lessons on
Internet Safety. DETAILS: The workshop will contain information on what students are doing online that is dangerous and examples of the dangers faced by students when on line. Also included would be the resources needed to compile a Presentation Graphics program for use in the classroom and community events. Through a simulation of internet activity, participants will become aware of the far reaching effects of Cyberbullying, Social Networking, Geotagging, Sexting and Chatting. Also, the tactics and tools sexual predators use to search and elicit information from on-line conversations or postings and how they use this information to entrap prospective targets. In addition, even though predators remain a constant threat to students, their inability to foresee the long term negative implications of their postings is becoming an ever increasing problem for them. For staff, the program also covers the downfalls of “connecting” with students through emails and social networking sites. Knowledge of these topics will enable participants to better understand risks and dangers faced by all while on-line. |
